A trader was killed in a crossfire with the police in the city's Dhanmondi Road No-3 in the early hours of Friday, police sources said.
Acting on a tip-off, the Dhanmondi police carried out an operation at the city's Road No-3 of the Dhanmondi area when Selim (30), who was also a trader, and his accomplices were preparing for dacoity at a local residence at around 2:30am, the police said.
But, sensing the presence of the police, Selim and his accomplices fired on them. And in the ensuing shootout Selim received serious bullet injuries in the head and others managed to flee away from the spot immediately.
Selim was rushed to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) where the attending doctors declared him dead at around 3am.
During the incident Sub-Inspector (SI) of the police Atikur Rahman also received bullet injuries and he was undergoing treatment at the city's Rajarbagh Police Lines Hospital in a critical condition.
Selim, a resident of the city's 34/1, Sonatangaon area under Hazaribagh Police Station and son of Momtaz Uddin Patwari, was a trader in printing at the city's Bakushah Market, sources said.
