SASP stages demo demanding removal of CEC, ECs
1/23/2006

Sammilita Ainjibi Samannay Parishad (SASP), a forum of pro-opposition lawyers staged demonstrations across the country Sunday demanding removal of the Chief Election Commissioner Justice MA Aziz and two newly appointed 'controversial' Election Commissio-ners-Justice Mahfuzur Rahman and SM Zakaria, reports BDNEWS.
As a central programme of the countrywide demonstration and rally, the SASP held a lawyers' rally at the south hall of the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) with SASP convener M Amir-ul Islam in the chair.
Extending support to the hartal called by the 14-party opposition combine, the meeting urged the people from all walks of life including lawyers and other professionals to build up united movement against the 'conspiracy of holding an election as per the blueprint of the government'.
The lawyers said the CEC and two 'controversial' ECs would have to be removed from their posts for the interest of transparency and accountability in discharging duties of the commission.
The SASP leaders said the Election Commission (EC) has become a farce due to the unconstitutional activities of the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Justice MA Aziz and appointment of two controversial persons as ECs by the four-party alliance government.
"The activities of the CEC and the government have pushed the nation and the country into uncertainty and democracy towards destruction, when the people have been waiting for a free and fair election," Barrister Amir-ul Islam said.
SCBA President Mahbubey Alam said the government has completed all preparations for holding a blueprint election like that of February 15 by appointing its political men in all the state institutions.
SASP Member Secretary Subrata Chowdhury, SCBA Secretary M Enayetur Rahim and several advocates among others, addressed the meeting.
