The flopped operation and lesson
1/24/2006

THE drive led by the elite force RAB in Kushtia is now being discussed everywhere. Some are even talking about the level of efficiency of the forces to nab JMB top operatives - Bangla Bhai and Shayakh Abdur Rahman. The home ministry and inspector general of police said they went for the high profile operation on the basis of definite information. But after long 18 hours they found nothing, though they rounded up 10 people on suspicion.
Here we can say that either the source could not give them the right information or the information was leaked from any of the sources. This glaring failure to nab any significant member of the outlawed JMB went down as an incredible embarrassment for the agencies concerned as well as the government. Acting on a tip off that the dreaded JMB top leaders were hiding at Poradah in Kushtia nearly two thousand personnel started the combing operation from Thursday morning. After failing to nab the JMB leader, the operation was called off in the early hours of Friday.
People who were overwhelmed at the elaborate arrangement that included helicopter patrol over quiet villages and were sure of the success of such a gigantic operation, are naturally disheartened at the flopped drive. In the circumstances, the onus is with the government to come up with a clear answer to dispel all misgivings and suspicions. The ministry apprehends that leakage of information might be a cause of the failure.
But as citizens and taxpayers of the country, we would like to say that the agencies should have to find a credible answer to the queries that agitate the public mind. Indeed, why and how the intelligence chain --- which must be foolproof, absolutely correct, impenetrable and beyond any scope of probable error --- had collapsed? What were the loopholes, and should there be any loophole at all? We feel that such a big failure can be disastrous.
