Dollar gains further against taka
FE Report
1/6/2006

The US dollar gained further against Bangladesh Taka (BDT) and rose to a new record at Tk 66.35 Thursday in the inter-bank foreign exchange market.
It rose by 0.04 per unit from Wednesday's high at Tk 66.31 due to short supply of the greenback in the market, sources said.
The short supply of the greenback has been further aggravated in recent days due to increase in opening letters of credit (LCs) for import of different items including gasoline, sources in the banking sector said.
The pressure on LCs payment against various importable items is still in the country's banking sector, the sources observed.
The banks quoted the dollar at Tk 66.31-66.35 on the day against Tk 66.31 of the previous day in the inter-bank foreign exchange market.
For opening LCs against imports, the nationalised commercial banks (NCBs) quoted the dollar at Tk 66.75, while the private commercial banks (PCBs) and foreign commercial banks (FCBs) sold the greenback at Tk 68.70-68.40 on the day against 68.65-68.40 of the previous day.
Currently, some commercial banks have been facing problem in making their import payments against LCs due to short supply of the greenback in the inter-bank market.
