The country's gas production reached 1,570 million cubic feet per day (mmcfd) as a new production well at Moulvibazar came into operation, it was announced here Thursday, reports UNB. Chevron Bangladesh (formerly Unocal) has developed the new gas well in its Moulvibazar field, which started producing 20mmcf per day from Wednesday. Advisor of the Energy Ministry Mahmudur Rahman Thursday formally inaugurated the operation of the newly-developed production well No-5. Officials of the Energy Ministry and Petrobangla were present at the function at Maulvibazar. Speaking on the occasion, Mahmudur Rahman said that two more new gas wells in two other fields, one in Bangura and another in Titas, are also expected to start production within the next few months. Of the fields, the Bangura field will add 80mmcfd to the national gas network while the well No-15 of Titas field will produce 20mmcf. The advisor said with the new production, the country's total gas production would reach a benchmark of 1,650 mmcfd by next June when the demand would be almost the same. "So, there will be no gas shortage by the middle of the current year," he said. The adviser also said that he plans to sit with the Petrobangla and three international oil companies, now operating in the country, to expedite exploration in the existing gas fields.
