Dubai-based co sets up cement plant in country

          Emirates Cement Bangladesh Limited (ECBL), a wing of Dubai-based ETA-ASCON multinational company, was launched Thursday aiming to meet the present demand of the country by producing international standard cement.
Speaking at the launching ceremony at the National Press Club ECBL Chief executive Officer (CEO) M.P Sahabdeen said the company will hare facilities that include a 10mw power plant on the factory premises, raw materials and brand new machinery from Germany.
He has expressed the hope that ECBL, while is a subsidiary of Star Cement, will soon have a strong place in the cement market of the country providing quality customer service.
He said ECBL has global experience in cement manufacturing in Africa and Middle East along with ten years' business experience in cement industry in Bangladesh.
The company has established cement grinding plant of 2000 TPD at Muktarpur and Munshiganj near river Dhaleshri at a cost of Tk 1.7 billion and has employed over 100 people, 95 per cent of whom are locally recruited.
An ECBL official has claimed that the company will have a production capacity of 0.55 million tonnes per annum and a daily production capacity up to 40 thousand bags.
The country has an annual demand of 40 million tonnes of cement while maximum production is 26 million tonnes, he said.
ECBL has two cement plants in UAE, one in Bahrain and a bulk cement terminal in Sudan.
The ETA-ASCON has 23 branches and associate offices spread over 20 countries across the globe. The group's consolidated sales at the end of 2004 was in excess of USD 2.2 billion, employing a workforce of nearly 35,000.
Cement plant manager Vijayan, Country Manager M.A Mohamed Sathak, Manager (marketing) Kamal Hossain and power plant Manager Sainath, among others, spoke.
