Since Bangladesh lies in the active zone of earthquake, jerrybuilt buildings in some major cities, including the capital, could bear the brunt if a 6-magnitude tremor jolted the country, experts said as India and Pakistan continued to count thousands of people dead in Saturday's quake, reports UNB. They said the country still looked ill-prepared to face a major catastrophe, like the earthquake that devastated the Kashmir region. Poor and insignificant post-disaster preparation on part of the government would only add up to casualties in the event of such a temblor, they forewarned. Hossain Monsur, Professor of Geology of Dhaka University, said the latest devastating earthquake in Pakistan and India could be taken as a premonition for Bangladesh. "Bangladesh is in high risk of earthquake and most of the structures in Dhaka are vulnerable due to faulty construction," he said. A study by the Disaster Management Bureau (DMB) and UNICEF reveals that around 6,700-RCC buildings in Dhaka could collapse if a tremor measuring 6 on Richter scale rocked the city.
