Home Ministry permits us to conduct political activities: Claim ICS leaders
BCL attacks leave 15 Shibir activists injured at DU
10/10/2005

At least 15 Islami Chhatra Shibir (ICS) activists, including its Dhaka University (DU) unit president, were injured in a combined attack by some activists of two factions of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) on the university campus in the city Sunday, reports UNB.
Witnesses said a group of pro-Awami League Chhatra League and Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JSD)-backed Chhatra League activists attacked their rivals at the Arts Faculty of DU.
Of the injured, nine were identified as DU ICS President Shishir Mohammad Monir, DU Arts Faculty unit President Mahiuddin, Social Sciences Faculty unit Secretary Maruf, Ferdous, Mahfuz, Jakaria, Masuk, Zahid and Humayun Rashid.
The sources said that a group of students led by Hemayet Uddin Himu, general secretary of the suspended DU unit AL-backed Chhatra League, and Sajjad Hossain of JSD-backed Chhatra League swooped on some Shibir activists while they were distributing leaflets at the Arts Faculty at about 11am.
The injured students were admitted to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
Afterwards, the angry BCL activists again attacked the Shibir activists at Mall Chattar at about 1pm where Masuk, Zahid and Humayun Rashid were injured.
Later, the Chhatra Shibir supporters brought out a procession in protest against the attack.
Additional police were deployed on the campus to avert any untoward incident. Tension was prevailing on the campus.
Meanwhile, the ICS, the student front of Jamaat-e-Islami Bangladesh, claimed Sunday that they were conducting political activities in the country, including the campus of DU, with the permission of the Home Ministry.
"On what basis some people say ICS is an illegal, secret organisation? Is there any part in the constitution that disallows ICS to continue its activities? Home Ministry permitted us to continue organisational activities," ICS General Secretary Shafiqul Islam Masud told a press conference Sunday noon.
The ICS organised the press conference at the National Press Club protesting the attack on its activists by Chhatra League on DU campus.
Referring to the ban on ICS on the DU campus by Paribesh-Parishad -- a platform of all student organisations -- Masud said, "There is no importance of the Paribesh-Parishad as university guardians including the vice-chancellor praised our activities."
Demanding the arrest of the BCL attackers, Shibir leaders urged the university authorities to take academic actions against those designing to create anarchic situation on the campus.
Among others, Shibir's DU unit President Shishir Munir and General Secretary Akhter Hossain addressed the press briefing.
