Fire guts 10 shops in Sylhet

          SYLHET, Oct 9: A devastating fire gutted 10 shops at a market in Dhahi Eidgah area of the town Saturday. Witnesses said the fire originating from an electric short circuit at 10 a.m. spread quickly and burned down valuables of two electric goods shops, two groceries, one fruit shop, one video games shop, two phone-fax shops, one tailors' shop and one saloon. On information, fire fighters rushed to the spot and put out the fire with the help of local people after an hour of frantic effort. The affected shop owners estimated the extent of damage at about Tk 1.0 million (10 lakh). — UNB

Mishap kills two on Dhaka-Sylhet highway

NARSINGDI, Oct 9: Two pedestrians were crushed under the wheels of a bus at Torua in Sadar Upazila this morning. The deceased were identified as Ibrahim (32) of Chapainawabganj and Ripon Miah (28) of Mymensingh. They were working as domestic helps at the house of Zinnah. The police recovered the bodies and sent those to the Sadar Hospital morgue for autopsy. The bus was seized but the driver was absconding. — UNB

Bandits loot valuables worth Tk 0.2m

BRAHMANBARIA, Oct 9: Armed bandits looted valuables worth about Tk 0.2 million (2.0 lakh) from the passengers of Karnaphuli Express train near Shashidal rail station, injuring four passengers, including a railway TT Saturday. Witnesses said the bandits in the guise of passengers boarded the Comilla-bound train from Akhaura and when it reached near the station at about 4.00 p.m. they swooped down on the passengers. At one stage the beat three passengers and the TT Mokbul Hossain mercilessly when they tried to resist them. — UNB
