DU observes Jagannath Hall tragedy day
10/16/2005

Dhaka University (DU) observed mourning day Saturday to mark the Jagannath Hall tragedy where 39 students were killed in 1985 when the roof of the assembly building auditorium collapsed, reports BSS.
They were watching popular drama serial 'Shuktara' on television when the tragedy struck.
The university authorities organised various programmes including hoisting of black flags atop all student dormitories as well as academic and administrative buildings while the university flag was flown at half-mast to observe the day.
The day was declared a holiday.
Students, teachers, officials and employees of the university brought out a mourning procession from the Aparajeya Bangla early morning and marched towards the memorial plaque at Jagannath Hall.
They placed wreaths at the memorial plaque and observed one-minute silence to paying their respect. People from all walks of life offered prayers seeking eternal peace of the departed souls of those who died in the incident.
Jagannath Hall arranged a photo exhibition of the victims and blood donation programme.
The hall authorities will hold condolence meeting in its auditorium on November 24.
