Record number of stars to run the election race

          With the national elections still one year away, leading personalities in the cultural arena and in the field of the media are in the race to have nominations from the different political parties, especially from BNP and main opposition Awami League (AL) -- the two mainstream parties, reports BDNEWS.
Sources said the number of film and television stars are more in the race than in the past. The number of persons joining politics from the showbiz is not less. Examples may be cited of Reagan, Estrada of the Philippines, Sunil Dutta, Shatrugnu Sinha, Shabana Azmi, Govinda and Tapos Pal of India and Jibon Kumaratunga of Sri Lanka.
In Bangladesh, Shohel Rana, Kabori Sarwar, Asaduzzaman Noor, Alamgir, Faruq, Tarana Halim, Fakir Alamgir and Momtaz are eager to get tickets from the Awami League while Ujjal, Deepjal and Ahmed Sharif seek tickets from the BNP. Filmmaker Shahidul Islam Khokon will be candidate from BikalpaDhara Bangladesh of Dr B Chowdhury. But there were none seeking nomination from the Jamaat-e-Islami.
Besides, Laila Hasan, Falgooni and Tanima Hamid, Sami Kaiser, Tarin, Monalisa, Diti, Dilara and Moushumi are active under the banner of the Bangladesh Sangskritik Jote.
Rozi Afsari, Javed, Shohana, Khurshiduzzaman Utpal, Baby Nazneen and Simla are under the banner of the JASAS, the cultural wing of ruling BNP.
BikalpaDhara Bangladesh (BDB) will also raise its cultural wing. Film-maker Shahidul Haq Khan, Quazi Hayat, Abul Khayer Bulbul and film-stars Shakib Khan, Purnima and Srabonti are linked to the BDB.
Cultural personality Asaduzzaman Noor MP of Awami League will be candidate from Nilphamari-2 constituency. He is popularly known as 'Baker Bhai' all over the country.
Once the 'sweet girl' of filmdom Kabori Sarwar feels bitter about seeking nomination. She said with resentment: "I have been in the field over 20 years ... but I'm getting no nomination yet."
Her desired constituency is from Comilla, Narayanganj or Chittagong. Kabori, who was raised in Chittagong, has her influence in Narayanganj through her husband. She also has family link in Doudkandi of Comilla.
Actor Alamgir will seek nomination from Nabinagar-2 constituency where he maintaining his public relations. He is expected to have AL ticket to vie in the elections.
Marshall Art hero Shohel Rana expects ticket from Barisal-2 constituency. His likely rivals are BNP lawmaker Moyazzem Hossain Alal and Rashed Khan Menon of the Workers' Party.
The senior vice-president of Bangabandu Sangskritik Jote Sujan Faruq has been in the public relations for a long time.
Rasheda Moheuddin of 1996 Janatar Moncha is also optimistic about wining from Mymensingh-5 constituency. Her plus point is axing of Mosharraf from the cabinet this year. Mosharraf was the state minister for energy for over three and a half years.
Folk Singer Fakir Alamgir is doing field-work in full swing from Faridpur-5.
Alamgir Kumkum of Bangabandu Sangskritik Jote is keen to contest from Munshiganj-2. If he gets AL nomination, his rival will be B Chowdhury. Popular folk singer Momtaz wants to contest from Manikganj.
Ahmed Sharif, acting as villain character in cinema, intends to contest from Kushtia Sadar and actor Ujjal from Sirajganj.
Mirpur ward commissioner Deepjol wants to contest from Dhaka-11 constituency in BNP ticket.
Golam Kuddus of Sammilitaya Sangskritik Jote also wants to contest from Noakhali-3 constituency.
