FE Report
10/16/2005

A database on Bangladeshi scholars and professionals around the world -- www.scholarsbangladesh.com -- was formally launched in the city.
On this occasion, a launching ceremony was organised Saturday at the BRAC Centre Inn.
Vice-Chancellor of BRAC University Zamilur Reza Chowdhury formally inaugurated the new website.
Science and ICT minister Abdul Moyeen Khan was present at the function as chief guest while eminent academician Zillur Rahman Siddiqui, Pro-VC of Dhaka University AFM Yusuf Haider, former finance minister Abul Mal Abdul Muhit, Executive Director of Centre for Policy Dialogue (CPD) Debapriya Bhattacharya, scientist Mohammad Zafar Iqbal, economists Atiur Rahman and MM Akash and Prof. Syed Manzoorul Islam were present at the function as special guests.
President and founder of newly launched website ME Chowdhury Shamim described in details different opportunities offered by the website.
In his speech Moyeen Khan said that true scholars live in the country at present and will continue to live in future. They are not leaving the country for better future. Scholars go abroad for higher education and then come back again to serve the country, he added.
Zafar Iqbal and Syed Manzoorul Islam raised question about the definition of scholars.
Debapriya, in his speech, said that the new website will help bridge the communication gap between non-resident Bangladeshi (NRBs) and Bangladeshi who are living in the country.
He said the new website would help to involve expatriate Bangladeshis in the development activities of Bangladesh.
The new website would help to know about expatriate Bangladeshi scholars and scholars who are living in the country, ensuring better communication among them. It would also help to contribute towards the economic development of the country, speakers observed.
