DUET closed amid continued Shibir-Chhatra Oikya clashes
10/18/2005

GAZIPUR, Oct 17 (UNB): Dhaka University of Engineering and Technology (DUET) was closed today (Monday) sine die amid raging clashes between rival student politicians that left 40 injured in last two days.
Official sources said the authorities took the decision following fresh outbreaks of violence Monday, with the "cadres" of Islamic Chhatra Shibir (ICS) and Chhatra Oikya fighting each other throughout the campus.
Witnesses said trouble erupted again at about 12 noon today after Sunday's clash over the issue of Shibir cadres organising a pre-Iftar meeting in the central mosque of the university.
The injured were rushed to the Sadar Hospital, and eight of them were later shifted to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) with "critical injuries".
The seriously wounded students are: Habib, Mostafiz, Akther, Azgar, Kamrul, Nayem, Arif and Sayedul.
On information, the police rushed in and brought the situation under control.
At least 10 activists of the Chhatra Shibir, the student wing of Jamaat-e-Islami, Bangladesh, a partner of the ruling coalition, and of the Chhatra Oikya were injured in Sunday's clash.
Chhatra Oikya is an anti-Shibir broad-based alliance of student organisations that also groups JCD, the student wing of the ruling BNP, and BCL, the student front of the main opposition Awami League.
