Jagannath University may begin activities from next fall semester
10/19/2005

The present Jagannath University College is likely to function as a full-fledged university from the next fall semester with admission to the first year honours classes, reports BSS.
The full-fledged university will be effective following the issuance of a gazette notification, Project Director of the university Ayesha Shirin Rahman told the news agency Sunday.
Prime Minister Khaleda Zia, in her earlier tenure, laid the foundation stone of the Jagannath University on November 2, 1995.
Ayesha Rahman said after the passage of the Jagannath University Bill in Parliament, President Iajuddin Ahmed assented to the bill last September.
The project director said the authorities are determined to make the university as an ideal institution in the country where the students will also be engaged in extra-curricular activities besides formal education.
Due to lack of adequate land, all the buildings of the university will be built vertically. "In this context, we have already taken a plan to build a 21-storey arts building and a 10-storey Teachers Students Centre (TSC) on a total 10.5 acre university campus", Rahman said.
Replying to a question about the 442 existing teachers of the proposed university, she said the teachers who have no third class at any level in their academic career will continue their jobs in the university for five years on deputation.
The largest number of students, about 36,000, are now studying in the college at honours and masters levels.
