UN must be strengthened thru' reforms: President
10/25/2005

President Iajuddin Ahmed has said the United Nations (UN) must be strengthened through reforms and provided with adequate resources to meet the expectations of the people across the world.
"The UN is a source of inspiration and it supports in our national, regional and international endeavors. It is the forum where we frame global standards, shape universal values and dedicate collective resolve to action plans for the common good of mankind," the President said.
Speaking at a function marking the 60th anniversary of the United Nations organised by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) at Hotel Sonargaon Monday, President Iajuddin said it must be ensured that "The United Nation's decisions result in actions to meet the expectation of our peoples, our nations and our world."
He said in the age of globalisation, the UN is indispensable for the collective management of world affairs.
Foreign Minister M Morshed Khan and UNDP Resident Coordinator Jorgen Lissner also spoke on the occasion.
The President said the UN deserves the supports of all nations, in a more active and demonstrable way, for the UN to be of greater relevance to the member nations.
"The failure of the UN is the failure of its member nations, and that includes every nation," he said, adding "the success of the United Nations in promoting development and building world peace depends on all of us - on our understanding and support."
Prof Ahmed said wherever the UN has been allowed to take its rightful role and provided with necessary support, it has achieved success.
Recalling the establishment of the UN 60 years ago, he said a spark of hope emanated from the ashes of the devastating Second World War.
"It ignited the human spirit for higher cause of peace, stability, order and socio-economic progress." the President said, adding the UN was created to "save succeeding generations from the scourge of war" and as an organisation to serve all the people of the world.
The President said the UN Charter symbolises the hopes and aspirations of the world people to live in peace and security and sharing the fruits of development.
