LETTER TO EDITOR

Prime Minister speaks
10/25/2005

The prime minister outlined the success stories of her governance of the past four years but did not hesitate to criticise share market scandal during Awami League regime in 1996 while failure to contain corruption was confessed. As a non party Bangladeshi I an sorry to point out that a good number of BNP politicians, MP's and even ministers did raise billions of taka share capital through sale of shares of Public Limited cos but cheated the investors though prospectus indicating juicy return. Just after the PM's broadcast Apex Tannery Cum Footwear CEO, Chief of Association of Banks and also the chief of employers association, was very much critical about four years' successs story. Again he gave interview on corruption, Law and Order situation but every time I watch him on TV, I get a slap on my face as by inviting in Apex Tannery Right Share, I have been cheated though he was twice Adviser to care taker government.
During Awami League government, Beximco Group vice chairman as FBCCI chief accompanied at the Prime Minister in all the foreign tours so as to attract foreign investment. Unfortunately, thousands of share holders of Beximco Textile, Beximco Denim, Beximco Knitting, Beximco Fisheries, Shinepukur holding etc. have lost money though Textile Sector is suppose to be sunrise sector in view of WTO rules in force in respect of garments export from 2005.
It is evident from Forbes journal, USA, that worldcom chief along with his a account's personnel got jail sentence for making forged accounts and fictitious investments in Annual report collapse of world com a public limited, exceeds the Total salary, benefits etc. provided to all the minister for a five year term similar is the fate of Permalat, a public limited.
Under the above facts should the Audit firm of our Finance Minister assess the assets of fraudulent public limited cos who are enjoying interest free capital on the one hand and getting cash subsidy on the other from government! Many of the CEO's of these dividend-default public limited cos are great plunderers of history like Nadir Shah, Sultan Mahmud or Genghiz Khan. A pick pocket when caught is often beaten rather mercilessly to death but meticulous 'mega-plunderers' of public limited cos are safe and represent civil society, lawmakers and so on. Let us not preach, equality before the eye of law while we continue to be corruption champion again. Should gentlemen of jury ponder honestly?
