Awami League leader and former state minister for information Abu Sayeed strongly condemned the statement, given by 40 Jamaat leaders, in which they termed the demand of banning the politics of Jamaat and Chhatra Shibir as 'provocative' and 'illogical,' reports BDNEWS. In a statement on Saturday, Sayeed said Jamaat, the mother organisation of the militants, must not be allowed to do politics for the greater interest of the nation and its sovereignty. He demanded implementation of the unanimous resolution of banning politics of Jamaat and Shibir adopted in the Jatiya Sangsad in 1993. The Awami League leader said the demand of banning the politics of Jamaat and Shibir is not a new issue. It is the basic demand of the freedom loving people. Thirty-three lawmakers including AQM Badruddoza Chowdhury, then deputy leader of the House, BNP leader Major (rtd) Hafiz Uddin, Ashraf Hossain, Shahjahan Siraj and Sirajul Islam of Islami Oikya Jote took part in the discussion in support of banning politics of Jamaat and Shibir at the Jatiya Sangsad from September 19 to 23 in 1993. He said Jamaat is still practicing the politics of killing in the disguise of religion. The continuous patronisation and support of Jamaat to the militants has resulted in the desperate rise of militants in the country. Considering the prevailing situation in the country, it is necessary to ban the politics of Jamaat-e-Islami and Chhatra Shibir, he added.
