Bhuiyan asks municipal chiefs to ensure sound waste management
10/30/2005

LGRD and Cooperatives Minister Abdul Mannan Bhuiyan Saturday called upon the chairmen of municipalities to keep their respective areas clean through sound waste management, reports BSS.
At the same time, he urged them to build beautiful towns through construction of houses and buildings in planned manner.
He was speaking as the chief guest at a ceremony held at Nagar Bhaban to mark the distribution of 'road rollers' among different municipalities of the country.
The land rollers were procured by the Local Government Engineering Department for different municipalities.
Presided over by acting Mayor of Dhaka City Corporation MA Majid, the function was also addressed, among others, by LGED Secretary A H M Abul Kashem, Joint Secretary (Development) Mohammad Shafiqul Islam, Tongi Pourashava Chairman Ajmat Ullah and DCC Chief Executive Mohammad Saifuddin.
Bhuiyan said that the present government has been working sincerely for strengthening the local government bodies to make them real agents of development. He said the government firmly believes that unless the local bodies were strengthened, democracy could not be given an institutional shape.
The minister also said without strengthening the local government bodies, the poverty alleviation programme of the government could not be materialised.
Bhuyian said foremost obligations of the municipalities are to enhance the civic amenities like development of roads for which road roller would be very essential. He assured that all the municipalities would be given road rollers in phases.
