Aman production likely to miss target in Rangpur
Our Correspondent
11/10/2005

RANGPUR, Nov 9: Production of Aman paddy in Rangpur district may fall short of the target this year because of flooding and storms, followed by pest attacks in different areas, sources said.
The Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) sources said a total of 148,000 (1.48 lakh) hectares of land were brought under the Aman cultivation in the district with an output target of 306,000 tonnes this season.
But the farmers are apprehending that they may not be able to achieve the production target as rainwater caused an extensive damage to the standing plants.
An official of the DAE said Aman crop on 25,450 hectares has been damaged partially and on 11,078 hectares totally in the district.
Aman fields in many areas, where the crop was cultivated, now hardly show any sign of it as pests like grasshopper and stemborar destroyed whatever was left after the flooding and storms.
