LETTER TO EDITOR

After the summit
11/15/2005

DHAKA looks beautiful now. Some people commented that the city gives a look of Singapore or Kuala Lumpur. All credit goes to the just-concluded Summit of the South Asian Association of Regional Cooperation (SAARC). The SAARC Summit made Dhaka clean and pleasant.
May be we cannot reduce traffic congestion and movement of pedestrians. But we have to keep it clean. All concerned will need to make hard efforts for the purpose. We all have to cooperate with the authorities and the private companies who contributed a lot to make Dhaka beautiful. Dhaka's beauty was appreciated by our guests. So we should maintain it.
First of all, one thing has been proved that we can live without a kitchen market at the heart of the city. The Kawranbazar kitchen market in front of Sonargaon Hotel makes everything dirty around it. Besides, it is a source of congestion from Farmgate to Shahbagh. We must think of shifting it from the city. Another good decision was the relocation of the Tejgaon truck stand. The whole Tejgaon area looked exquisite during the SAARC Summit as the trucks were not there. This should be maintained even after the summit.
The kitchen market should be near Tongi while the truck-stand must be relocated to Savar or any other suitable area, outside the main city. We must give our city a better look to make it liveable.
