ROME, Nov 20 (Reuters): Jacques Diouf was re-elected for a third term as head of the United Nations' Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) Saturday, promising to reform the agency which some diplomats say is in danger of losing its relevance.
The 67-year-old Senegalese, who was the African nation's ambassador to the UN before becoming the FAO's director-general in 1993, stood unopposed and won 137 votes out of 165 cast at the body's governing conference in Rome.
Diouf has said he will use the new six-year term to push ahead with reforms to make the agency, charged with improving agriculture and beating hunger, more efficient.
Last year, the US ambassador to the FAO criticised its response to the African locust crisis, saying it suffered a 'lack of urgency' and decent leadership in the field.
