PDB power plants' overhauling begins next month
FE Report
11/29/2005

The power ministry has decided to begin overhauling and renovation work of all power plants next month to keep the electricity generation and supply stable across the country.
During a meeting with the officials of all power plants Monday, the power ministry reviewed the existing power generation and supply situation of the Power Development Board (PDB) and asked the official concerned to complete renovation and overhauling before the next summer.
State Minister for Iqbal Hasan Mahmood chaired the meeting that was attended by high officials of the power division, PDB and power plants.
Sources said power generation faces frequent disruptions due to technical faults and the PDB carries out overhauling and renovation of the power plants, especially those are operated by oil and gas.
The PDB has to spend over Tk 700 million to Tk 800 million every year for overhauling and renovation purposes, sources added.
Last year, over 20 power generation units, including those located at Raujan, Ashuganj, Ghorashal, Haripur, Baghabari, Shahjibabar, Fenchuganj and Khulna, went out of operation due to technical faults, reducing the PDB's electricity generation capacity to 3150 megawatt (mw) from 3850 mw.
PDB sources said it has already prepared a list of power plants to be placed under overhauling on priority basis.
"We will carry out overhauling of the old power plants in the first phase because such plants need overhauling more than once a year," a PDB official said.
