Nine persons, including a Jubo Dal leader, were sentenced to death Monday for the sensational double-murder in which a business tycoon of old Dhaka and his son were severed into 119 pieces following abduction, reports UNB. The sentenced convicts were Jubo Dal leader Md. Rafiqul Islam Kajal, Md. Abdur Rahim, Sirajul Islam, Moloy Sarker, Bhutto, Kazi Noor Kayum, Kamal, Mintoo and Nizam. Only Rahim stood in the dock when a speedy trial tribunal delivered the verdict in a crowded courtroom. All the remaining convicts have been on the run since the killings in March last year. According to the prosecution, Juba Dal leader Kajal and his accomplices abducted Md. Shamsul Haque, the owner of a hosiery market in old part of the city, his son Russel and driver Moazzem Hossain on March 26, 2004 in a bid to 'grab' the market. The abductors slaughtered the father and the son and cut their bodies into 119 pieces. The dismembered body parts and flesh were later found scattered at different places in Gazipur and Abahani field in the city. Abdur Rahim was caught from Benapole check-post on his way to India. Later, he gave confessional statement under Section 164 of the CrPC before a magistrate, narrating the spine-chilling story. As per his statement, police recovered some evidences from Mohammadpur area in the city and identified the place where the pieces of dead bodies were found. Sufia Khatoon, the widow of Shamsul Haque, filed a murder case with Sutrapur thana against the suspects. After examining the records and 23 witnesses out of 69, judge of the court Shahed Nooruddin handed down the verdict. The trial of driver Moazzem is pending. Sufia Khatoon burst into tears after hearing the verdict. "We are satisfied with the judgement," she said.
