Allegations of threat to 'monga'-hit people in Nilphamari to keep mum during Hasina's visit
11/9/2005

NILPHAMARI, Nov 8 (BDNEWS): Commotion prevails among the ruling BNP centring around the visit of the leader of the opposition Sheikh Hasina to Nilphamari.
Although BNP and its front organisations have not announced any programme to resist Sheikh Hasina's visit, they are holding processions and rallies for the last two days.
Chhatra Dal organised a rally in the district town Tuesday morning while upazila BNP held rally at Kachukata in the evening.
District BNP has also announced to hold rallies and processions Wednesday morning.
Besides, there were allegations that the BNP leaders were threatening monga-affected people not to disclose any information regarding their sufferings to the opposition leader Sheikh Hasina.
Several villagers on condition of anonymity said BNP leaders during their visit to villages in the last two to three days, are threatening the monga-hit people and asking them not to say anything regarding their sufferings.
The BNP leaders, however, rejected the allegations.
Member secretary of district Jubo Dal Mir Selim Faruque told BDNEWS that they held meetings and processions in protest against false statements by Dr Kamal Hussain and Suranjit Sengupta to BBC.
Publicity Secretary of Awami League Asaduzzaman Noor MP, however, said the alliance government of BNP-Jamaat always tries to hide the sufferings of the common people.
