Jalil granted anticipatory bail in abduction case
11/9/2005

The High Court (HC) granted Tuesday anticipatory bail to Awami League (AL) General Secretary Abdul Jalil MP in an abduction and land occupation case till reopening of the court after Eid vacation, reports BDNEWS.
After hearing a petition filed by Abdul Jalil, a vacation bench of the HC comprising Justice SK Sinha passed the order.
Mustari Begum of CWN(C), 3, 105 Gulshan Avenue, Dhaka, on November 2 filed an abduction case with the Gulshan police station against Abdul Jalil.
In the case, she alleged that Jalil along with 10/12 unknown persons on November 2 went to her residence and said that he had purchased the plot, and the possession of the plot will be handed over to him on the day.
"Earlier, a group of terrorists in a microbus came to my house and kidnapped my husband and son, tortured them and threatened to kill them if the land is not surrendered. After a few hours at 7:30pm, they were released at Sector 7 of Uttara," she alleged.
Abdul Jalil appeared Tuesday before the court and sought bail in the case.
Counsel for the petitioner Abdul Baset Majumder submitted before the court that the case has been filed intentionally against his client, the general secretary of the main opposition Awami League, with a view to politically harass him.
Meanwhile, Chairman of Mercantile Bank and AL General Secretary Abdul Jalil claimed Tuesday that the case filed against him with the Gulshan thana police was false and politically motivated.
While speaking at a press conference at the head office of Mercantile Bank in the city he said the case was filed through conspiracy to tarnish his image as well as his party and the bank.
Abdul Jalil said he bought over 20 'kathas' of land from one Mushtari Begum at Gulshan Avenue and it was registered following the completion of necessary legal procedures.
"But Mushtari Begum filed a case against a director of the bank along with him", he alleged.
Abdul Jalil said he would contest the case under legal procedure and the truth would come out through proper investigation.
