The Supreme Court (SC) rejected Tuesday a government plea seeking stay on the High Court (HC) order directing the government not to arrest or harass Ekushey Television (ETV) Chairman Abdus Salam until November 20 in three criminal cases.
Chamber judge of the Appellate Division Justice MM Ruhul Amin also fixed November 16 for hearing of the stay petition filed by the government in the regular bench of the Appellate Division.
On October 7 and October 19, Abdus Salam's divorced wife Farzana Shilpi, and Sub Inspector (SI) of Kafrul Thana Nasimul Islam filed three criminal cases against Abdus Salam with Kafrul police station and chief metropolitan magistrate (CMM) court.
After hearing separate bail petitions filed by Abdus Salam, also the managing director (MD) of ETV, the HC, on October 25 and October 27, ordered the government not to arrest and harass him (Salam) so that he can surrender before the HC on November 20.
Additional Attorney General Abdur Razzak Khan and Deputy Attorney General Helaluddin Mollah moved for the government before the court while TH Khan opposed the petition.
