A school in which children are taught using objects and instructive play is usually known as kindergarten. No doubt the system is European and nowadays it has spread out all over the country. And sending kids to kindergartens has become a fashion here also. But the inside information about today's kindergartens is: mockeries and business oriented unfair games.
It is impossible at present to find out the total number of kindergarten schools. Almost everyday a newer one is added. The founders know nothing but earning money from the sector. The reality--get better or get beaten is absolutely followed in child-parent-teacher oriented business. Kindergarten or KG schools do not ensure education, as most of the houses have no sufficient facilities, good and qualified teachers are rarely there. The management rarely tries to introduce quality books, guideline, instrument etc. Kindergartens do not have any healthy relationship with National Curriculum Board. Narrow streets, broken school vans and carelessness are the common attributes of KG schools. A salary of Tk. 400 to 1200 for a teacher can hardly ensure quality education in a kindergarten; in a country where more than 5 million educated young men are without jobs, teaching is termed often as 'passion' by the management of the schools to motivate the teachers so that they do not demand a rise in their salary.
The young man who is a schoolteacher is also a teacher at home. The situation is as like a fish market. All are busy earning money but no one care proper coaching. In Kindergarten, motherly affection is absent. Some kindergartens run well in Dhaka and Chittagong, while the rest can't make good result. In a recent case study it has been made clear that being frustrated in jobs or other activities, many have started kindergarten schools.
With a minimum decoration and few learners, one starts a KG school. Then the group looks for chances to make money. They concentrate on better dress, school van, parents day, attractive verbal communication etc, for the students. But when tested, it becomes evident that education is not the business of those institutions. Md. Abdul Halim, owner of Baby care kindergarten school, Sanir Akhra on the other hand emphasises on donation and government contribution. M.K. Rafiqul Islam, a teacher of Childguide Pre-cadet School comments that he tries heart and soul for the children.
True, there are some quality KG schools in the major cities of the country where both education and care are adequate. But those schools are few in number. Only few guardians can send their children to those schools. Undoubtedly, those are expensive KG schools where proper things are available.
In the near future education will become a commodity. Without a common curriculum KG schools will lose direction.
Ensuring open environment, soft approach, proper intellectual application, good transport, better books etc. can only improve the condition.
