A weekly pot pouri on urban life by Ershad Khandker
12/7/2005

Winter is here. There is a division of opinion about the pleasures of winter but asking someone from Canada would bring a firm answer - winter in Bangladesh is just great. The season brings vegetables that are tastier or so it seems because of the pleasures of the feel good aura of winter itself. This pleasure should be enjoyed to the brim including the other more ritual social happenings based on the winter theme. People should devour Pithas, and hold barbecues to celebrate life itself. The reason being, life is always more important than any force of evil or backwardness and we should continue to lead a normal life. Even in a normal way, one should not get too serious about life, busy 24 hours and no time for fun or social activity. We have successfully attained the status of being most prone to cardiac disease and other kinds of ailments, and that disease would be handed down to our successive generations. The best defense against decay of health and transference of disease genetically, is to try and not be afflicted with the many modern ailments that we know we can prevent. And while we are taking this long-term plan, there is a need for day-to-day vigilance against many more immediate dangers that are injurious to health. Those of us who have been slumbering through life because of the drudgery of a routine existence should wake-up and smell the roses. There is now a need to keep your eyes open for suspicious packages and more importantly questionable characters lurking around looking like they are up to some mischief. We should be on guard on a continuous basis, just allow you our mind to understand the need for this, and your consciousness would take care of you. Your 6th sense would kick in automatically .You do not need to be dressed in a fatigue, carry a binocular or some thing more lethal! Just keep your mobile phone ready to make the call if you need to or receive calls from loved ones who may need to access you for emergency evacuation to safer places if there is a sudden need to leave a place of stay during the day. All this becomes a habit because you adjust to the need for it. But Life goes on to the fullest. It is a duty on every body to maintain normal life, almost as sincerely as all the measures of common sense you take as precaution. A caution to the earning members of the household, Beware! Send some off to your offshore account outside Dhaka for those who do not have offshore accounts outside Dhaka, send part of your money to the offshore account in Caymans or some such place! For your writer, easy come easy go, small coming, small going ! So no such offshore account in village home and Cayman is to be spelled correctly not to be thought about! What a wonderful season of festivities are around us. The whole world is looking toward having fun in the month of December. This writer is most anxious for the Eid because of the fun and the enjoyment derived from a traffic jam free city! Listen everybody; lets have fun in this winter! Cheers!
