Christmas Day, the greatest religious festival of the Christian community, will be celebrated today (Sunday) in commemoration of the birth of Jesus Christ, reports UNB. Christmas is a celebration of rebirth, of new beginnings, of forgiveness and peace as the New Year approaches. Marking the auspicious occasion, the Christian Community in the country organise many festive programmes including decoration of their homes and churches with Christmas trees, special church prayers, distribution of gifts among children by Santa Claus, family gatherings and a Christmas day feast. The government has taken tight security measures across the country for peaceful celebrations of the festival. President Iajuddin Ahmed, Prime Minister Khaleda Zia and Leader of the Opposition Sheikh Hasina gave special messages on the occasion. In the message, Iajuddin said the ideals of Jesus Christ seeking well-being of the humanity and enriched with the glory of sacrifice inspire humankind to follow the path of peace and welfare. Prime Minister in her greetings for the Christian community of the country said the message and ideals of Jesus Christ could show the path of light and peace in the world fraught with strife and unrest. Greeting the members of the Christian Community, opposition leader Sheikh Hasina expressed her firm conviction Christmas Day festivals would strengthen the existing communal harmony between the country's Christian and other communities.
