Compensation claim to Niko will be placed soon
12/25/2005

The Energy Ministry will send a letter in a day or two to Niko Resources, the Canadian operator of Tengratila gas field, claiming compensation for the two blowouts at the gas field, reports UNB.
Adviser of Energy Ministry Mahmudur Rahman confirmed this as his ministry has already received the vetting of the Law Ministry for moving the compensation claim.
The first of the two blowouts at Tengratila gas field took place on January 7 and the second happened on June 24 this year.
Two separate investigation committees, formed by the government, held the Niko Resources solely responsible for the two blowouts and determined the extent of losses caused by them.
Official sources said the Energy Ministry would place the compensation claim for burning out of some 8.0 billion cubic feet (bcf) of natural gas from the field and damage of equivalent to Tk 840 million to the local environment as a result of the two blowouts.
The total amount of compensation estimated earlier would be roughly Tk 2.5 billion, including Tk 840 million for environmental damages, the sources added.
Niko has been operating two gas fields, one in Feni and another at Tengratila of Chhatak in Bangladesh.
