Law Minister Moudud Ahmed said in the city Saturday that since the party government has no responsibility to hold general elections, caretaker government should have the independence to reform the electoral process and all should have confidence in its power, reports UNB. "It is necessary to consider strengthening the election commission for holding free and fair elections keeping present constitutional framework unchanged," he said at the launching ceremony of Justice Chowdhury ATM Mashud's book "Reminiscence of Few Decades and Problems of Democracy in Bangladesh" at a city hotel. Mizanur Rahman Shelley, Chairman of APPL that published the book, former Minister Sirajul Hossain Khan, Mahbubur Rahman MP, Harunor Rashid, columnist Sadeq Khan and former caretaker government Advisor Abdul Malek also spoke at the function. Moudud said major political parties would have to take the initiative to ensure elections free from black money and terrorism to consolidate the democracy. Billing present system of caretaker government as unique, he said there is no instance of such constitutional provision of caretaker government anywhere in the world. The Law Minister claimed that all preconditions for good governance prevail in the country with elected government and parliament, "independent" judiciary and free media in place. " Now a big challenge before us is how to improve the standard of these institutions," he told the function. In this regard, he further said parliament must be made effective by avoiding the bad culture of boycott. He said the opposition should eschew from "irresponsible" conduct and play their due role in making parliament effective.
