China's former minister gets life sentence for bribery
12/28/2005

BEIJING, Dec 27 (AFP): China's former minister of land and natural resources has been sentenced to life imprisonment for accepting bribes, state media said Tuesday.
The Beijing No. 2 Intermediate People's Court sentenced Tian Fengshan for accepting about 4.36 million yuan (538,000 dollars) in bribes between 1996 and 2003, the Xinhua news agency said.
All his personal assets will be confiscated and his political rights will be forfeited for life, it said.
Tian was governor of the northeastern province of Heilongjiang before being appointed land and resources minister in 2000.
Details of Tian's wrongdoing have not been revealed. But when he was fired from his post in 2003, there were media reports he was involved in corruption scandals linked to the booming real estate market.
