LETTER TO EDITOR

Leaders should unite against terrorism
12/7/2005

NO doubt, the nation is now in a real crisis. Islamic extremists called Jamaa'tul Mujahideen of Bangladesh are doing everything to make people's lives insecure. They are not only blasting bombs throughout the country, but also threatening people belonging to all walks of life through sending mails or leaflets. All kinds of socioeconomic activities are facing the consequences of such uncertainty. But this is not the case with the politicians. Political leaders are still engaged in blaming each other. Sincere efforts are yet to be taken about giving a sincere offer to the opposition in order that politicians from both sides of the political divide can put their heads together to find out a solution to overcome the present crisis.
Initially, there was a hope among the people that the recent national crisis would be able to bring the main political leaders to the discussion table. But this hope vanished within a day or two, even though the JMB activists continued their activities in an orchestrated fashion. They are still intimidating people of different professions and threatening to blow up some educational institutions. We also cannot overrule the possibility of such occurrences as the activists have so far done what they had threatened or wanted to do.
Nowadays, people are suffering from serious insecurities in their lives. Situation has come to such a pass now that every person is holding the other person who might be around him or her with a suspicious eye. Fear has gripped the people everywhere. But nothing touches the leaders. They are all responsible for pushing the situation out of control. We all urge them to unite at least for the sake of the nation and its people and our school going children. It has become imperative to check this kind of heinous activities in the country.
