Seed crisis may hamper potato cultivation in B'baria
Our Correspondent
12/9/2005

BRAHMANBARIA, Dec 8: Potato cultivation in Brahmanbaria may be hampered this season due to acute shortage and high price of seeds.
Farmers have alleged that Bangladesh Agriculture Development Corporation's (BADC) selected seed dealers and other traders are presently selling low-quality seeds at high prices. Thus they are trying to create an artificial crisis to earn extra profit, farmers said.
While visiting the local markets this correspondent has found that BADC seeds are available in the open market. These are being sold in plenty at Ananda Bazar, Sarakbazar, Jagat Bazar and Medda Bazar of the district.
Earlier, each 40 kg-bag of potato seeds was sold at Tk 600 and now it is selling between Tk 800 and Tk 1000 in those open markets.
BADC dealers said they cannot meet the current seed demand due to short supply.
Some local NGOs are also selling potato seeds at high prices, though of poor quality.
