BARISAL, Feb 10: Aman production target in 11 districts under Barisal agriculture zone could not be achieved this season. The output is 500,000 tonnes less than the target of 1.58 million (15.8 lakh) tonnes this year due to recurring floods, according to the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) sources. The farmers alleged that most of the field level DAE staff in different areas did not take up rehabilitation programmes in their respective areas in time. The most serious problem was scarcity of seedlings and the local DAE staff were not ready with seed beds on high lands for supply of seedlings in time of need, they said. The deputy director of the DAE in Barisal, however, said the production shortfall was due to floods and late sowing.
