36 Indians among hajj dead
1/15/2006

NEW DELHI, Jan 14 (AFP): At least 36 Indians were among the hundreds of Muslims who died in a stampede during the pilgrimage to Mecca, an Indian official said Saturday.
"We have identified 36 Indians so far, but the number is likely to go up as we are still collecting information," Ausaf Sayeed, the Indian consul general in Saudi Arabia, said by telephone from Mina, where tragedy struck on Thursday.
He said a dozen Indians had been treated for minor injuries in hospitals.
Two of the deceased were migrant workers from India, according to a statement on the website of the Indian consulate in Saudi Arabia.
The official said the exact number of Indians still missing was not known, as pilgrims were still moving from Mina to Mecca after the end of the annual hajj.
"We are going from building to building in Mecca to find out if people are still missing," Sayeed said.
