CHITTAGONG, Feb 12 (UNB): A 48-hour transport strike, enforced by Bangladesh Sarak Paribahan Sramik Federation from 6 am, Sunday, on 49 routes in Chittagong division, was called off seven hours after the start. After separate meetings with Additional Divisional Commissioner Amir Hossain and DIG Mesbahunnabi, the federation called off the strike at 1 pm. Transport movement on the routes resumed at about 2 pm. Chief Advisor of the Federation, Chittagong Unit, Mrinal Chowdhury, President Azizul Haq and General Secretary Oli Ahmed were present during the meetings. The federation called the strike to press home their 14- point demand, which includes cessation of `toll' and 'token' business of police, prohibition on plying air-conditioned buses on Teknaf route and establishment of bus and truck terminals in Chittagong and Cox's Bazar. Mrinal Chowdhury told the news agency that they withdrew the strike after getting "assurances from the concerned authorities that they would consider all their demands".
