'PM reluctant to face opposition'
B Chy, Dr Kamal visit Kansat, talk to Rabbani
2/13/2006

CHAPAINAWABGANJ, Feb 12 (UNB): Former President Badruddoza Chowdhury and Dr Kamal Hossain campaigning against the government today visited the troubled Kansat where eight power hungry people died in police firing on January 23.
They held closed door meeting with Golam Rabbani, convenor of Kansat Palli Bidyut Sangram Committee, at the latter's home. The meeting gave rise to speculation that Rabbani who gained popularity in the area is likely to be promoted to challenge the ruling party candidate in the next general polls at Kansat.
Later B Chowdhury of Bikalpa Dhara and Dr Kamal of Gano Forum addressing a rally at the Gopalnagar crossing condemned the police firing on the villagers who were demanding uninterrupted power supply.
They said it is not only Kansat, the whole country is in the grip of acute power crisis. Fertiliser and diesel crises because of mismanagement of the corrupt government now add woes of the farmers. They also expressed total solidarity with the people engaged in the movement for power, fertiliser and diesel.
Golam Rabbani accused the local member of parliament (MP) of the ruling party of police firing and held him responsible for the death of ten farmers on two occasions for raising genuine demands.
Another report adds: Bikalpa Dhara Bangladesh (BDB) President AQM Badruddoza Chowdhury said Sunday the absence of Prime Minister Khaleda Zia in parliament indicates her reluctance to face the opposition.
"People can understand the fact… She doesn't want to face the opposition," the former President said.
He was speaking at a BDB meeting organised at the National Press Club to exchange opinion with the party's Dhaka city leaders.
He said Leader of the Opposition in Parliament Sheikh Hasina returned to the House ending a long boycott of more than a year, but the Prime Minister was not there.
Criticising the government for its failure in different sectors, including electricity, he asked the Prime Minister to quit power forthwith.
He also denounced the government for attacking their party leaders in a peaceful rally in Thakurgaon.
