Water supply situation
WASA officials asked to report on daily basis
2/28/2006

Local Government and Rural Development (LGRD) Minister Abdul Mannan Bhuiyan directed Monday WASA officials to regularly monitor the water-supply situation and report to the ministry daily in the wake of water crisis in different areas of the capital city, reports UNB.
"Report everyday to me and the ministry's secretary about the situation," the minister asked the WASA high-ups following reported outcry for water in some areas.
The minister made the directive during his emergency meeting with the Dhaka Water and Sewerage Authority officials at the WASA head quarters.
The meeting was informed that water supply at different places is temporarily being disrupted due to inadequate power supply -- a problem now facing the entire country following frequent tripping of power plants.
However, alternative arrangements are being made with mobile generators to keep the water supply normal.
The LGRD minister asked the WASA officials to be watchful about the operation of pumps for ensuring smooth water supply and also take measures for "immediately commissioning" of the newly installed pumps.
He also directed the officials to keep the water lorries "ready to immediately drive to an area as soon information from there about water crisis is received".
Secretary of Local Government Division SM Azharul Islam and Managing Director of Dhaka WASA Kazi Ali Azam were present at the meeting.
