Six persons get death penalty
2/7/2006

MEHERPUR, Feb 6: The district court today awarded death penalty to three young men, two in absentia, for murder of a trader in Ghangni Upazila seven years ago. Abdul Hamid, the judge, handed down the verdict to Rustam of Shympur village in Sadar Upazila. Two other convicts -- Rahman of Shympur and Enamul of Phulbaria - remained fugitive since the murder. The prosecution said 12 to 14 terrorists came to the house of Yunus at the dead of night on Nov 9, 1998 and fired several shots at Yunus but missed the target. While fleeing, the terrorists hurled bombs at the chasing villagers that left Atiar Rahman badly wounded. The terrorists shot the lying man to confirm his death. Another report from Satkhira said the district judge awarded death sentence to three persons and life term to four others for murder of two police constables three years ago. Judge Osman Hyder pronounced the verdict in a crowded court awarding death penalty to Raihanul and Abed Ali of Bakal village and Zakir of Shukhrali village. Maleque, Shahin, Milan and Sobhan were awarded life term and fined Tk 5,000 each. Two others were acquitted. According to the prosecution, constables Fazlul Haq and Motaleb of Itagacha police camp were murdered and constable Ahad was wounded on Feb 5, 2003. — UNB
