ONE more incident of building collapse has just added to show the bitter consequence of our mindless actions in some sectors. This time the incident claimed lives of more than a score of people and caused injuries to several others. The casualty figure might increase once the rescue workers complete their salvage operation. We all know this kind of incident will continue to claim lives in coming days, too, unless our regulatory bodies swing into actions to enforce strict discipline. When this letter goes for point, the possibility of yet another incident of building collapse taking place somewhere in the country cannot be ruled out. The Nakhalpara building collapsed within 48 hours of a harrowing fire incident at a garment factory in Chittagong. What is agonising is that such incidents are experienced very frequently in the country. There were a number of incidents of fire and building collapse last year and the years before that. The fatal development we have noticed in the recent case was that the time gap between one incident and another has awfully reduced. From the frequent occurrence of these avoidable incidents it is obvious that the government is inert, which allows the culprits and all concerned who are guilty of indifference to escape accountability. Our culture of granting total impunity has increasingly made the lives of our people insecure everywhere whether at home or on the street and in every step of life from taking food to sleeping.
