Beijing to provide flood forecast info from Apr 15

The Chinese government will provide Bangladesh with information and data about flood in the upstream of the Brahmaputra River from April 15 next, reports BDNEWS. Water Resources Minister Hafiz Uddin Ahmed said this at a press briefing at the conference room of the ministry Thursday. The minister said the assistance from the Chinese government would help the country issue the flood forecast four to five days ahead of a flood previously they were able to issue such forcasts ahead. The press conference was held after the visit of a five-member delegation led by the Water Resources Minister to China from February 26 to March 3. The Chinese government agreed to provide Bangladesh with information and data about the flood condition of the Yang Lu Jangbo river flowing through China to develop a flood forecast and warning system in the upstream of the Brahmaputra basin, said the minister. Hafiz Uddin said the two countries agreed to assist each other in the international arena on water resources issues. He also told the press conference the Chinese government offered technical assistance to Bangladesh in water management and flood control. Water Resources Secretary Syed Mohammad Jobaer, WAPDA Director General Sharif Rafiqul Islam and Joint River Commission member Towhidul Anwar Khan were present at the press conference.
