Intensifying state-level legal aid free of cost for the poor stressed
3/12/2006

RAJSHAHI, Mar 11 (BSS): Speakers at an advocacy meeting Saturday underscored the need for intensifying the activities of state-level legal aid services free of cost for the underprivileged and distressed people.
Every citizen of a democratic and welfare-based country has the right to get legal protection for life and property, they said.
The local unit of Bangladesh Legal Aid and Services Trust (BLAST) arranged the meeting on "Government Legal Aid Activities: Context-2006" at the Advocate Bar building here.
District and Sessions Judge Abu Bakar Siddikey addressed the meeting as the chief guest with BLAST President Syed Ekramur Rasul in the chair.
Local Bar President Zillur Rahman, Labour Court Chairman Adbus Samad, journalists Mustafizur Rahman Khan and Hassan Millat, Rajshahi Law College Principal Ali Akbar Pramanik and local BLAST Coordinator Abdus Samad and Secretary Hamidul Haque also spoke on the occasion, among others.
The speakers said a large number of women in society, who are being subjected to frequent repressions, do not get any legal support due to ignorance of legal aid being extended by the government and various non-government organisations.
They said objectives and legal aid service procedures of the organisations should reach the grassroots level people in a big way so that the services are provided properly.
They laid emphasis on raising massive awareness among the target group, particularly distressed women victims.
