14-prty combine lays siege to EC offices across country
3/13/2006

As part of a nationwide programme, the Awami League (AL)-led 14-party combine Sunday staged demonstrations laying siege to Election Commission offices across the country to press for resignation of Chief Election Commissioner MA Aziz and the two newly appointed commissioners, reports UNB.
The demonstrators also demanded cancellation of the "controversial" voter list on the anvil and the alleged appointment of ruling-party "cadres" as enumerators and election officers.
In Chittagong, the Combine activists laid a siege to the divisional Election office in city's Jamalkhan Bilane at about 11:10am that lasted about two hours.
Earlier, the activists gathered in front of the local Press Club and started marching towards the EC office. Kotwali police put up barricades on the road but later removed the roadblocks and closed the main gate of the office.
Divisional Chief Coordinator of the Combine and Chittagong City Corporation Mayor ABM Mohiuddin Chowdhury led the demonstrators.
At the conclusion of the programme, Mohiuddin said the 14-Party Combine rejected the new voter list prepared by the BNP- Jamaat government and asked the government to cancel their orders to send the voter list to the central election office for approval by March 20.
Another report from Khulna adds: The 4-Party Combine besieged the divisional Election Commission office to press their demand.
In Munshiganj, police put barricades when 14-Party Combine went to besiege the local election commission office Sunday.
Local AL claimed that three of their activists were injured when police put up resistance.
In Bhola and Rajbari, the local chapters of the 14-Party Combine staged demonstrations in the town demanding resignation of the Chief Election Commissioner and the two newly appointed commissioners.
However, AL-led 14-party opposition combine
will stage sit-in demonstration in front of the secretariat on March 30 demanding implementation of proposals for reform of caretaker government system and Election Commission.
It will hold countrywide rally on March 14 protesting Sunday's police action against the opposition activists on their march to the EC office.
The opposition will hold sit-in demonstration in front of the secretariat demanding cancellation of controversial voter list and upgrading the existing voter list, resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Justice MA Aziz and other two Election commissioners, trial of Ministers, MPs and officials who patronized the Islamic militants and international inquiry into rise of militancy.
AL general secretary and coordinator of the 14-party combined Abdul Jalil MP announced the programme at a press conference at its Dhanmondi office Sunday.
Jalil also demanded impeachment of the Chief Election Commissioner for his physical and mental incapability.
He further demanded cancellation of the appointment of Chattra Dal and Chattra shibir cadres as enumerators and election officers.
