Afghan suicide bomb targets convoy
3/13/2006

KABUL, Afghanistan Mar 12 (CNN): A suicide car bomb crashed into the convoy of a leading Afghan politician and blew up Sunday, killing the two bombers and at least two bodyguards in the convoy, authorities said.
Sibghatullah Mujaddedi, the head of Afghanistan's upper house of parliament, survived the attack unharmed, according to Afghan security forces and the Interior Ministry.
At least three other people were wounded in the attack, officials said.
Mujaddedi serves on a commission to try to promote reconciliation between repentant Taliban members and the current Afghan government. He is also a former president of the country, briefly heading up Afghanistan in 1992.
Two vehicles in Mujaddedi's convoy were damaged in the blast, an Associated Press reporter saw.
The four-wheel-drive vehicle with tinted windows usually used by Mujaddedi had shattered windows and one side was riddled with shrapnel, the AP reporter said.
An aide said Mujaddedi reached his office safely and was not hurt.
"It was a very dangerous conspiracy against Mujaddedi. Mujaddedi is fine. He is in his office," said Syed Sharif Yousafi, who is head of Mujaddedi's office, AP reports.
