The Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) claimed that only 53 out of some 4000 readymade garment (RMG) units were not complying with safety measures in their respective premises. The association submitted the number and details of those factories recently to the commerce ministry following a government directive in the backdrop of tragic fire incident in the KTS factory in Chittagong last month. Ministry officials, however, said the number of non-compliant RMG units will be much higher than that claimed by the BGMEA. They will review the BGMEA report and others issues relating to the local RMG sector Thursday at a meeting. Representative of the local RMG units and Europe-based buyers are likely to attend the meeting.
