3/15/2006

A woman victim of a police brutality during the opposition 14-party's Election Commission siege programme on March 12, Tuesday filed a case in the court against 25 policemen, including two deputy commissioners (DC) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), reports BDNEWS.
In the compliant filed in the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (CMM) court, Dhaka, the woman complainant accused the police personnel of assaulting her physically, and snatching of gold-ornaments, mobile telephone, wristwatch and money in cash.
The complainant Shahin Sultana Shanta, daughter of Justice Shamsul Huda Manik and wife of Supreme Court lawyer Atiar Rahman, is herself a lawyer.
Appearing in person before the court of AJM Abdullah Hel Baqi, she filed the case under sections 326, 394 and 334 of CrPC where she alleged that the police beat up her following the direction of DC-South Mazharul Huq and DC-West Kohinur Miah.
She said policemen tortured her dragging her out of a clinic where she had taken shelter during the skirmish between the police and opposition activists in front of Rapa plaza in the city's Dhanmondi area while going to bring back her son from school.
The court taking the complaint in cognisance directed the IGP to investigate into the matter and let the court know the progress of the investigation. It also fixed April 16 as the next hearing date of the case.
