3/18/2006

KURIGRAM, March 17 (BSS): Members of the Bangladesh Rifles (BDR) seized 2.60 tonnes low quality smuggled Indian jute seeds worth about Tk one million from Nageswari border in Kurigram last night. They also arrested two smugglers in this connection, official said.
Sources said an organised gang of cross-border smugglers smuggled-in 2.60 tonnes of very low quality Indian jute seeds packed in 2,600 smaller bags last night and stockpiled those at the frontier village of Santoshpur under Nageswari Upazila of the district. The smugglers were loading the seeds on a truck.
Acting on a secret information, a BDR official from Kurigram 27 Rifle Battalion along with the patrolling jawans of Ramkhana outpost of BDR suddenly raided the place and seized the jute seeds at midnight last night.
They also arrested two smugglers Golam Mostafa, son of Badsha Mahmud of Puratan Station area in Munshipara Moholla of Kurigram town and Abdul Gafur, son of Monjer Ali of Hemerkuti village under Sadar Upazila of Kurigram from the spot. Another smuggler Shameem Mia of Nakharganj village in Nageswari Upazila managed to escape, the sources said.
Later, BDR deposited the seized jute seeds with the customs authorities at Joymonirhat.
