Fire kills 1, injures 20 in Narayanganj
3/19/2006

NARAYANGANJ, Mar 18 (UNB): A physically handicapped woman was burnt alive and 20 people sustained injuries in a devastating slum fire in Pagla area Saturday morning.
The fire that broke out at Jasimer Slum, behind Suryamahal Cinema Hall, at about 10.00am also burned down 110 shanties.
Local sources said the fire originated from an oven at one of the houses and raged through the whole slum, burning Nurunnahar (50) alive and injuring 20 others.
Of the injured, Zakir, 7, and Sumi, 2, were sent to Dhaka Medical College Hospital "in critical condition".
On information, five fire-brigade units from Postagola and Mondolpara rushed to the spot and struggled for two hours to put out the blaze.
"The slum-dwellers, mostly day labourers, have become paupers as they have lost all their belongings in the flames," says a spot report quoting the locals.
