Growers expect bumper mango harvest this year
3/26/2005

RAJSHAHI, Mar 25 (BDNEWS): Bunches of tiny green mangoes (choitro karali') are in abundance in the mango trees of Rajshahi and Chapainawabganj indicating a good harvest this year.
The Mango Research Centre (MRC) in Chapainawabganj and fruit traders said this year is an 'on year' and they are expecting a bumper yield of mango, if the climate favours.
In every alternative year mango grows in plenty. Mangoes varieties like gopalvog, mohanvog, khirshapati, lengra, amrapali, laxmanvog grow plenty in the region. However, production of fazli, the king of mangoes, may decrease this season.
"Most of the mango orchards have been sold in advance by mid February," said a mango trader adding, "the price was comparatively high."
Agricultural Extension Department (AED) sources said, last year 1.2 lakh tonnes of mango was produced in Chapainawabganj although that was an 'off year'. A total of 19,400 hectares of land in five upazilas of the district were brought under mango cultivation.
Beside, nine upazilas, including Sadar upazila of Rajshahi, produced about 50 thousand tonnes of mango in 10 thousand hectares of land. There are some large mango plantations in Bagha, Charghat, Godagari and Poba upazilas.
The production of mango has reduced in Rajshahi over the last decade due to expansion of urbanisation in the adjacent areas of the city.
